Judge Melissa Phinn of the Circuit Court ruled that Syed, who is 41 years old and has served more than 20 years in jail, should have his sentence overturned and be released right away. However, he mandated that Syed be put under home arrest and have his GPS whereabouts tracked.

Phinn noted that the state had 30 days to decide whether to pursue a new trial date or dismiss the case.
Syed has maintained his innocence of killing his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee all this time.
In 2014, a segment on the “Serial” podcast that focused on Lee’s murder and threw doubt on the prosecution’s case brought the case to the public’s notice.
Becky Feldman, an assistant state attorney in Maryland, told the judge, “I appreciate how terrible this is, but we have to make sure we hold the appropriate people accountable.” She was outlining specifics of the evidence that refuted the claims made against Syed.
